Mexican Cubensis: Where Psilocybin Cultivation Began
The Mexican Psilocybe cubensis is one of the oldest cultivated varieties, closely linked to the Mesoamerican tradition where psilocybin mushrooms were known as teonanacatl. When R. Gordon Wasson participated in a Mazatec mushroom ceremony in Oaxaca in 1955, it set off a chain of events that eventually led to the isolation of psilocybin by Albert Hofmann in 1958. The Mexican cubensis carries that history in its name, and it remains one of the most accessible varieties for growers at any level.
Reliable, Forgiving, Consistent
The Mexican grows reliably across a wide temperature range (20-25 degrees C) and forgives the kind of minor mistakes that beginners inevitably make: slightly uneven humidity, imperfect room temperature, or opening the bag too often to check progress. The fruiting bodies are medium-sized with classic golden-brown caps and slender stems. They mature at an even pace, making harvest timing straightforward. Three or more flushes are typical, with each subsequent flush producing slightly smaller but still worthwhile fruits.
The kit arrives fully colonised, with a growth bag, air filters and paper clips included. Just add water and maintain the right temperature. Shelf life refrigerated: three to six months.
The Smartshop Staple
Every smartshop needs a Mexican in its range. It is the variety most staff recommend to first-time buyers, and that recommendation drives volume. First-timers who succeed with a Mexican often come back for something different, creating a natural progression through your grow kit range. Stock alongside a B+ Grow Kit for complete beginner coverage.
Both are beginner-friendly, but they differ in character. The Mexican produces more slender fruiting bodies with classic golden-brown caps. The B+ tends to produce larger, meatier fruits. The Mexican has stronger cultural and historical roots, which appeals to customers interested in the tradition behind psilocybin mushrooms.
At 20-25 degrees C, first pins typically appear within 10-14 days. The first full harvest follows about a week later. Browse all cubensis grow kits to compare timelines across varieties.
