Kanna: Plant Profile and Traditional Use

Sceletium tortuosum grows in the semi-arid Cape regions of South Africa, where it has been used for generations by indigenous communities as a social and mood-enhancing plant. Traditional preparation involved fermentation of the crushed plant material — a process known as kougoed ("chewing thing") — which modifies the alkaloid profile. This fermentation step is still considered relevant to the final alkaloid composition of quality kanna products.

The primary alkaloids are mesembrine, mesembrenone, mesembrenol, and tortuosamine. Mesembrine is the best-studied of these and is generally considered the main active constituent. The alkaloid profile varies between batches and between prepared (fermented) and unfermented material. Retailers should understand these variables when discussing kanna with their customers.
