Red Amazonian Tree Resin
Dragon's Blood is a deep red sap harvested from Croton lechleri (also classified as Croton urucurana), a fast-growing pioneer tree found throughout the Amazon basin in Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Brazil. The evocative name comes from the blood-red colour of the sap, which flows freely from the bark when cut. Indigenous Amazonian peoples have used this distinctive resin for generations as part of their traditional plant practices, particularly valuing it for external applications.
Composition and Unique Properties
The sap is notably rich in taspine, an alkaloid that has been the subject of extensive ethnobotanical research. It also contains a remarkably high concentration of proanthocyanidins, a class of polyphenolic compounds. Some analyses have found Dragon's Blood to contain up to 90% proanthocyanidins by dry weight, making it one of the most polyphenol-dense plant exudates known.
When applied to skin, the resin forms a thin protective film as it dries, creating an almost latex-like barrier. This physical property, combined with the striking crimson colour, has also made Dragon's Blood a sought-after ingredient in modern cosmetic and skincare formulations worldwide.
