Paricá in the Amazonian Context

The word Paricá refers to seeds from the Anadenanthera peregrina tree, one of the most significant ethnobotanical species in South American indigenous traditions. The tree grows across the Amazon basin and its seeds have been used in ceremonial preparations by numerous indigenous groups for generations. In the Katukina approach, Paricá's role within the rapé blend is to provide the intense, clearing quality that distinguishes this preparation from softer, more meditative blends.

The Katukina Approach

The Katukina people of the Jurua River in Acre, Brazil, maintain one of the most diverse rapé pharmacopoeias in the Amazon. Their six clans -- Varinawa (sun), Kamanawa (jaguar), Satanawa (otter), Waninawa (peach palm), Nainawa (sky) and Numanawa (dove) -- each contribute to a collective ceremonial knowledge that spans generations.
