Peruvian Yellow Caapi (Cielo)

Banisteriopsis caapi Yellow from Peru, known as the Cielo variety. This South American vine from the Malpighiaceae family is one of the most significant botanical specimens in Amazonian ethnobotanical tradition. The name 'Cielo' (sky) reflects indigenous cosmology, where the vine is seen as a bridge between worlds.

Origin and Botanical Profile

This Peruvian Yellow Caapi has a distinct profile compared to the Brazilian Yellow (Ourinhos) variety. While both carry the Yellow designation, differences in terroir, altitude and local processing traditions give each a unique character. The vine contains beta-carboline alkaloids: harmine, harmaline and tetrahydroharmine (THH). Properly dried shredded vine retains these alkaloids for 2-3 years under correct storage conditions.

Many indigenous communities have unique origin myths connected to the Caapi vine. Most names translate to 'vine of the souls' or 'vine of the spirits', connecting to the widespread motif of the World Tree or Axis Mundi.
