Passiflora Incarnata Herb Tincture
Passiflora incarnata, commonly known as the purple passionflower or maypop, is a climbing vine native to the southeastern United States, Central and South America. The entire flowering herb (leaf, flower and stem) is used in traditional herbal preparations. Native American communities incorporated passionflower into their plant practices for generations before European colonists documented it in the 16th century. Spanish missionaries in the Americas saw in the intricate flower a representation of the Passion of Christ, which gave the plant its lasting common name.
Phytochemistry and Botanical Heritage
The plant produces strikingly complex flowers with a distinctive corona filament structure that immediately catches the eye. Passiflora incarnata contains flavonoids (including chrysin and vitexin), harmala alkaloids, and other compounds that have been studied in modern phytochemical research. Chrysin in particular has attracted research interest. The aerial parts of the plant are richer in these compounds than the root.
This tincture is prepared from the flowering herb in a 40% alcohol base. The 40% concentration ensures thorough extraction of both the water-soluble flavonoid glycosides and the alcohol-soluble alkaloid fraction, capturing the full phytochemical breadth of the plant.
