Psychotria Viridis | Chacruna | Leaves

Psychotria viridis, also known as chacruna or chacrona, from the Quechuan verb "to mix". The plant belongs to the Rubiaceae (the family of the coffee plant). It is a shrub or small tree with small red fruits and long, narrow leaves. The plant can grow up to 5 meters high. The leaves are about 5-15 centimeters long; this is the part that contains the psychoactive substances.

Psychotria viridis is native to the low-lying Amazonian region. It is an evergreen tropical tree or large shrub and grows in full sun to semi-shade. It has large leaves, which are oval with pointed ends. The small brown seeds are sprouted from red berries.

The herb is strictly offered as a botanical specimen.
